Set of Six Swedish Directoire/Gustavian \Style Painted Side Chairs
A very decorative set of six dining chairs of classical Directoire style, (referred to as Swedish Gustavian style). The open chair backs feature a central carved harp within an oval and above, a carved urn with flowers and garlands. The frames are painted in a two toned white and light blue. The round front legs are tapered and fluted. They are recently upholstered in a grey/black damask velvet. Likely Swedish circa 1900.
The Gustavian style is a Swedish version of the French neoclassical style (late Louis XVI and Directoire) that is more simplified and restrained in nature, almost provincial.
