Set of Eight Directoire Lyre Back Cane Seated White Painted Chairs
A very decorative set of eight dining chairs of classical Directoire style, (referred to as Swedish Gustavian style). The open chair backs feature a central carved harp within an oval, and above, a carved urn with flowers and garlands. The frames are painted in a two toned white and light blue including the painted cane seats. The round front legs are tapered and fluted. Likely Swedish circa 1900. The Gustavian style is a Swedish version of the French neoclassical style (late Louis XVI and Directoire) that is more simplified and restrained in nature. It perhaps looks more country like.
