Oil Painting by Claude-Marie Dubufe titled ‘Morning’ or ‘Le Reveil’

A beautifully executed oil painting of a young lady awakening from her lavishly draped bed, her left arm partially covering her face possibly against the morning sun. She is clothed in a diaphonous white night gown and lays back against her overstuffed bedding. Likely painted in the mid 1830’s. Signed Dubufe on the middle of the right hand side of the canvas; a plaque on the frame with the name of Claude-Marie Dubufe also mentions it being a ‘Portrait from Monaco’. Presented in a period French Empire carved and gilded frame.

Claude-Marie (1790 – 1864) was a French historical, genre and portrait painter, born in Paris, and studied under Jacque Louis David. His subjects were at first classical, and then scriptural. He then gave himself up to the painting of genre pictures and portraits. His reputation rests chiefly on his portraits, of which he produced a large number. Dubufe, who was the last representative of the school of David.
