Large Scale White Onyx and Gilt Bronze Napoleon III Candelabra

$25,000.00

This grand pair of candelabra are of the highest quality, made of carved onyx, and finely cast gilded bronze. They were made during the Napoleon III era in France and are exceptional examples of the decorative arts of the period. They are Louis XVI in concept but are so highly decorated as to be unquestionably late 19th century. The carved and stepped onyx bases are decorated in gilded bronze; they support a large onyx urn of ovoid shape which has elaborate cupid handles joined by garlands to a finely chased gilded bronze frontal mount. The ‘urn’ supports a central stem from which three sets of three candle arms join each other with beaded gilt bronze swags. On top of the central stem is a tri-form ‘table’ each of the three legs topped with an eagle’s head supporting the final top candle nozzle.

At one time these candelabras were discreetly wired into lamps, however only the top candle nozzle has been electrified.
