19 Century Napoleon III Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Clock

A fine and rare large scale Chinese porcelain and gilt bronze mantle clock , the body of the in hand painted rose medallion design, (famille rose), and richly embellished with finely chased and gilded bronze mounts. The porvelain pis painted with court scenes, tea ceremonies, medallions framing flowers, birds etc. The twin handled clock case is surmounted with a gilt bronze cornucopia atop a band with suspended decorations, the whole siting on elaborate gilt bronze circular base. The porcelain would likely date from the late 19thC, then sent to Europe/France where the decorative gilt mounts would have been added.

The clock has it’s original eight day French movement with a ‘watch’ type balance wheel. It rings the hours and halfs on a bell. The rim of the back glass plate is stamped LM, likely the initials of the clock maker.It is in mint condition but three out of eight umbrella like hanging pendants at the top are missing.

Rose Medallion is a 19th and 20th Century Chinese Export Porcelain. It has a unique characteristic way of identifying it. There is often a central medallion of a rose, peony or even birds. The dominant colors are usually pastel pinks and greens and can also include red, blue, orange, yellow or gold. Rose Medallion can be found as plates, bowls, cups, vases and teapots. If there is no mark on the underside, the piece dates 1850-1890. If marked “China” it is 1890-1915. “Made in China” dates the piece after 1915. There are no marks on the bottom of the clock
