Exceptional Napoleon III Chinese Famille Rose and Gilt Bronze Clock Garniture
A fine and rare large scale Chinese porcelain mantle clock and vase/garniture, the bodies of the three pieces in hand painted rose medallion design, (famille rose), and richly embellished with finely chased and gilded bronze mounts. The three pieces are painted with court scenes, tea ceremonies, medallions framing flowers, birds etc. The twin handled clock case is surmounted with a gilt bronze cornucopia atop a band with suspended decorations, the two urns have large gilt ram’s head handles. The three pieces sit on elaborate gilt bronze circular bases. The porcelain would likely date from the late 19thC, then sent to Europe/France where the decorative gilt mounts would have been added.
The clock has it’s original eight day French movement with a ‘watch’ type balance wheel. It rings the hours and halfs on a bell. The rim of the back glass plate is stamped LM, likely the initials of the clock maker.
Rose Medallion is a 19th and 20th Century Chinese Export Porcelain. It has a unique characteristic way of identifying it. There is often a central medallion of a rose, peony or even birds. The dominant colors are usually pastel pinks and greens and can also include red, blue, orange, yellow or gold. Rose Medallion can be found as plates, bowls, cups, vases and teapots. If there is no mark on the underside, the piece dates 1850-1890. If marked “China” it is 1890-1915. “Made in China” dates the piece after 1915. There are no marks on the bottom of these three pieces.
