A carved soapstone lamp base, unusual because of the color of the stone; reddish, brown and black. The carving is in the shape of a vase which is almost totally encrusted in ‘branches’ and flowers and buds. There is a great deal of all-over open carving which indicates the high quality of the sculpting; a great piece of Asian sculpture. The vase sits on an ebonized circular wooden base on a further gilt bronze French base.
