An exceptional and rare pair of Napoleon III Belle Epoque Breche marble shield shaped urns with striking intertwined serpent handles The base and top of urns are embellished with exquisite finely chased gilt bronze mounts. The tops are capped by gilt bronze crown shaped lids that can be removed to expose gilt bronze wells.
The type of marble that the urns are made from is called Breche de Breche de Saint-Maximin, a rare Mediterranean stone known for its complex veining and layered colors, featuring soft ochres, creams, and muted reds with deeper rust and honey tones. It is often used in high-end decorative arts and architectural elements like fireplace mantels due to its unique aesthetic appeal. France circa 1875
