Emil Preuss (German, 1866-1950). “Le Bouton du Rose,” (The Rose Bud) after an original by Antoine Wiertz (Belgium, 1806-1865). The original was painted in 1864 and owned by the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique and was sold at auction to further the mission of the Hartford Art School.
The painting depicts a lovely young brunette woman presenting a small rose bud to the viewer, a secondary figure is in background partially obstructed by curtains; signed Preuss E. in the lower left corner. The canvas has been relined; wear consistent with age. Presented in a period gilded wooden frameGerman circa 1890.
