A Pair of Napoleon III Ebonized Wood Boulle and Bronze Mounted Meubles D’Appui

A rare pair of French Napoleon III gilt-bronze mounted ebonised wood and boulle brass marquetryrcabinets referred to in French as Meubles d’Appui. The cabinets are not stamped but they bear the quialities and hallmarks of the renowned French Ebeniste Béfort Jeune. and may very well c ame from his workshop.
Each has a white marble top above a single door centered with large oval gilt-bronze medallions depicting complementary mythological scenes of Venus and Cupid after Clodion. The rest of the door panel is richlyl veneered with brass trellis marquetry referred to as hearts and lozenges. framed by ormolu beading and rosettes. The doors open to an interior fitted with two adjustable shelves.
Flanking the door to each cabinet cabinet are ormolu infilled fluted ebonized columns capped by gilt bronze corinthian capiltals and gilt bronze round bases. Above each door the cabinets are further embellished by a continuous gilt bronze rosette frieze.
