A cut ‘Quartz’ (flourite) Chinese Lamp

This type of lamp base was made primarily in the second quarter of the 20th Century in China. The relatively soft stone is usually light green or pink in colour and the better examples are hollow to accommodate an inside light bulb. The vase shaped lamp has a separate stone top which can be removed in order to replace the interior light bulb. The decorative brass ring connecting the vase and top is further decorated with an amethyst cameo. The carved stone vases were mostly shipped to the United States for the fitting of bases and electrification. They were popular in ‘upscale’ U.S. retail stores.
