Period French Empire fall front Desk (Abattant)
A period French Empire fall front desk referred to as an Abbatant. The case is constructed in a rich dark mahogany. There is a single drawer below the mottled grey marble top, below that is the fall front door which is flanked by columns surmounted with gilt bronze Egyptian heads. The fall front door is decorated with a central gilt bronze mount of very high quality. When opened the inside reveals a leather lined writing surface in front of seven smaller pull out drawers. The bottom section has two decorated front doors which when open show three pull out drawers. The entire case is enhanced with gilded bronze mounts. The desk has it’s original locks and key. Made in France in the first quarter of the 19thC, ie 1815.
