Pair of French 19thC Louis XV Style Giltwood Armchairs “A La Reine”


A Classic pair of Louis XV style giltwood armchairs. The French call these comfortably padded chairs, with tall flat backs and low seats “Chaises à la Reine,” which translates to “chairs in the queen’s manner.” The chair frames are of deeply carved and gilded beechwood with both burnished and matte gilding around the backs. The chairs are raised on four cabriole legs with a decor of rocaille cartouche and acanthus leaves. Arm supports are slightly behind the leg line adorned with acanthus leaves and C-crests and acanthus leaves. Presently upholstered in a maroon velvet damask pattern. Made in France, circa 1870.
