Pair of Early 19th Century French Empire Mahogany Armchairs “A La Reine”
A pair of French Empire mahogany fauteuils or armchairs ‘a la Reine’ in the manner of Jacob-Desmalter. The carved chair frames are in Honduran mahogany; the sloped padded open arms are carved with anthemions and continue into straight front legs; the back legs are slightly raked. The square chair backs are also slightly curved. The chairs have loose down-filled cushions. The mahogany frames are richly decorated with finely chased gilded bronzes which are applied with back pins rather than nails. The silk velvet striped upholstery is framed in empire piping. The frames have not been checked for any maker’s stamp.
