Oil Painting depicting a landscape in the South of France by Johannes Schiefer


A ‘Fauvist’ style oil painting on canvas by Johannes Schiefer, painted very much in the style of late Cezanne. It depicts a colourful landscape in the south of France titled Cagnes sur Mer. The painting was reportedly painted in the 1930’s.

Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands first attended the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he began his formal studies in art.
Mr. Schiefer, whose works are in numerous private collections, painted in France and Italy, elsewhere in Europe, in Mexico and Latin America. He came to the United States in 1942, and periodically had exhibitions at New York galleries. Later in life he was the curator of the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, L.I, New York.
