Louis XV-Style Chinese Porcelain Desk Clock
A finely modelled and painted Louis XV-style porcelain desk clock with a figure of a recumbent Chinese man (wise man). He leans against what appears to be a tobacco drum, of which a Swiss made clock or watch movement is mounted. The Chinese porcelain figure is mounted on a finely chased and gilded bronze French rococo-style base. Oriental porcelain was especially prized in France in the 18th and 19th centuries. Unmounted porcelain of various descriptions was shipped to France where gilt bronze mounts were often added for sale to wealthy patrons. Likely late 19th/early 20th century.
