Late 18thC French Cartel Clock by Gilles Laine
Of pure Louis XVI design; the clock in original fire gilded bronze; the large white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals is signed Gilles Laine, an important 18thC French clockmaker. The dial is surmounted with a draped classical urn, on each side of the dial are columns topped with goat’s heads, and draped lion’s skins; below the dial is a large lion’s head mask; the tapered clock case ends in a decorative pomegranate finial. The clock case design can be attributed to Robert Osmond.
The clock has it’s original silk string suspension movement ringing the hours and halfs on a bell. French circa 1785.
