French Empire Mahogany and Gilt Bronze Abattant


A French Empire mahogany secretaire desk, (or abbatant) having its original dark grey fossil marble top over a top ‘frieze’ drawer; the fall front door opening to reveal an interior fitted with a wide concealed drawer and six further smaller drawers.  The ‘floor’ of the fitted interior has an unusual secret sliding door. The writing surface of dark blue leather has a gilded border.  The desk has two lower doors that when open reveal three mahogany fronted drawers having gilded lion’s head ring handles; the desk rests on two front carved wood lions paw feet painted to resemble patinated bronze, and two painted oblong back legs. Both the top and lower sections of the desk are lavishly decorated with gilded bronze mounts in the form of curved cornucopia. ( A paper label to an interior door is dated 1821 )
