Directoire Style Demi-Lune Commode
A simple classically inspired Directoire style demi-lune commode (1790-1805). The cabinet has a shaped grey mottled marble top over two top drawers and two main doors. The fruitwood carcass is inlaid with ebony banding. Ornamentation was spare and light during that period, inspired by Greek and Pompeian models, and would never obscure a pieces basic structure. Squares and rectangles were pervasive and palmettes were common. Antique motifs such as tureens, urns, swans and winged lions were used repeatedly. This cabinet would date from the early 20th century.
